Goddess BASTET papyrus
Ancient Egyptians worshipped many animals, among them the cat, in the form of the goddess Bastet. It was the local deity of the town of Bubastis now called Tell Basta in eastern delta which contains her main temple. Her name means "she belongs to the bast (ointment jar)". Her earliest known form is carved on the stone vessels of the 2nd dynasty at Saqqara, she was also portrayed as a woman with the head of a cat or with the head of a lioness. As for this cat, its standing on her hands and sitting on her feet, her long tail is beside her, she is wearing the menat necklace around her neck and there are earrings in its ears.
